Campaigner Will Thompson climbed the derrick at Daneshill Energy Forest on the outskirts of Doncaster in the early hours of Tuesday and unfurled a “no fracking” banner at the site, owned by Dart Energy.
Mr Thompson agreed to end his protest and was arrested as he climbed back down.
A protest camp has been established across the road from the site over the last few weeks.
Pete Kennedy, campaigner for Frack Free South Yorkshire, said: “Will locked onto the rig following grave concerns about the impact of gas extraction on the environment and local communities.”
Dart has been granted a Petroleum Exploration and Development Licence (PEDL) to extract coal-based methane from the ground.
