Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, said if local residents don't want drilling in their communities, they need to stand up and fight.

TREMONT - About 45 people, most from western Schuylkill County, attended a discussion on Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling Tuesday night at the Tremont Municipal Building.

Shireen Parsons, a community organizer with the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, said if local residents don't want drilling in their communities, they need to stand up and fight.

She said areas where nonrenewable resources - like coal and natural gas - are harvested have become "sacrifice zones" where billion-dollar corporations make a killing but destroy water and quality of life in the process. Parsons' organization specializes in helping townships and boroughs craft ordinances to keep gas drilling, sewage sludge and other efforts out.Read More
